Spoke too soon...

Sigh...

Ava is apparently NOT fine. Her bloods did show a slight anomaly in that her white blood cell count is low. Not dangerously low, but lower than it ought to be. She's got to go back in 4 weeks for a repeat test and this time it will be sent off to the lab for her cells to be more closely scrutinised.

It could be nothing. It could be something nasty. We'll have to wait and see.

Incidentally that decides it- until we know what's going on with Ava, Inds won't be going off to be mated- we WILL NOT be having a litter of kittens this winter. Many apologies to anyone who was hoping we might (I know there was one person at least) and to regulars who like to read the kitten diaries! Perhaps a mating next spring or summer, but not in the near future.

I'll still be posting, though! So don't forget to check back.

  1. Hi Beth,

Have had fun reading through your blog today...learnt lots!

Sorry to hear about Ava, I hope her situation improves soon.

I have a blue Burmese queen and a chocolate point Siamese male who I am hoping have recently mated here in New Zealand. My female doesn't seem to have taken to the male at all, even after spending 3 days straight in his love shack. I'm torn between leaving her out with him and missing having her inside. Would appreciate any advice you may have.

    Thanks
    Jannine

  2. Is she a novice queen? (I mean has she ever done this before?) Or is he a novice? Sometimes you will find it takes them a while to figure it all out especially if both are new to the game. Also queens typically don't mate in the first part of heat- Indigo goes for it about day 4-ish. So I would say maybe leave her another day and if she still isn't showing any signs, bring her in, but when she next goes into heat try her again.

On the other hand, some cats are crafty, and get up to all sorts of shenanigans when their owners aren't looking- just because you haven't seen/ heard mating, doesn't mean it hasn't happened!

Good luck and let us know how you get on- we won't be having kittens this year so it ill be good to enjoy other people's vicariously!

  3. She has had two litters to a moggie cat, the same father we think...she is an excellent mother. We call the father "Raoul" as she cries for him when ever on heat. My 8yo son reckons she isn't interested in the Siamese Stud as she is a one man cat LOL.

She hasn't come on heat again just yet, but we have had LOTS of tail flicking. Fingers crossed, will keep you updated with our progress.

I know what you mean about living vicariously....have been looking through your blog at all the baby photos and getting very excited.

    1. Be careful with that one, she may prefer Raoul, but wandering Toms often carry diseases like FIV, FeLV etc, which can pass to the kittens. I would have her tested to make sure. Good luck with a second mating, hope she is more receptive to him this time :)

  4. Yes I have had her tested...it certainly wasn't planned but she is such an escape artist. Caught her dancing for Camel last night and then all tucked up with him so I would say she has finally been seduced by those beautiful big blue eyes of his :)

  5. Pretty sure my Minky is pregnant...she is a very lean cat so a little tummy bulge already. Her nipples are pinker and she's awfully sleepy. She hasn't come back on heat either so is it a safe bet you think? Might pop her into the vets this week to confirm. Hope all is well with you and you furry babies.

  6. If her nipples have pinked up, I would say almost certainly- that happens when they are about 3 weeks so it looks like your first mating was successful after all!

If you go right back to the beginning of this blog there's piccies of Indigo's undercarriage for you to compare, there's not really any mistaking pinking up.

Are your cats GCCF registered? One's a Burmese and ones Siamese right? If registered, the Tonkinese Cat Club and Breed Club members (there's two clubs) may be interested in your kittens in terms of new bloodlines- as your kittens will be 1st generation Tonkinese. They may not be interested, as lots of bloodlines are either not accepted or are already in our gene pool, but I thought it was worth mentioning
